Anna Karenina
Several tales of heart-break and forgiveness interwoven
into a cohesive whole. One might consider this the ultimate
romance novel—obviously referring to romance in the abstract,
not to be confused with the modern genre of pornographic smut
women read. This is a novel that deals with the important
uestions. What is love? What is passion? Are they the same
thing?—or are they distinct phenomena? Perhaps they’re
permanently interwoven. Is ‘follow one’s heart’ the worst
advice ever given? While the novel follows dozens of characters
through multiple tales and subplots, the majority of the novel
can be seen as two stories written adjacent. Konstantin
Levin—the self-conscious farmer who feels lost in the big city,
is seeking the hand in marriage of Kitty. Though faced with
difficulties, we see Levin struggle spiritually until he
finally finds faith in God—even despite being a rational man,
with all logic telling him God does not exist.
